Getting Started

What Is a Minor Ailment?

A minor ailment is a health concern that may be suitable for assessment and treatment without laboratory testing, imaging or a physician examination in every case.

  • βœ“Short-term
  • βœ“Low risk when appropriately assessed
  • βœ“Supported by clear treatment options
  • βœ“Unlikely to require extensive testing
  • βœ“Suitable for pharmacist care in eligible situations

A concern that looks minor isn't always minor

Some symptoms that seem minor can still require assessment by another healthcare provider. The pharmacist will review your symptoms and determine whether Pharmacy Care is appropriate for your situation.

Ask the Pharmacist
Regulated Care

What Is Pharmacist Prescribing?

In Alberta, a pharmacist with Additional Prescribing Authorization may initiate or manage drug therapy after completing an appropriate assessment, with enough information to make an informed decision within their professional competence.

  • Recommend self-care
  • Suggest a non-prescription treatment
  • Prescribe medication when authorized and appropriate
  • Renew or adapt an eligible prescription
  • Perform an available pharmacy test
  • Arrange monitoring or follow-up
  • Collaborate with another healthcare professional
  • Recommend assessment by another provider

An assessment does not guarantee that medication will be prescribed.

Not a physician-led clinic

Pharmacy Care is not a physician-led medical walk-in clinic and does not replace every service provided by a family doctor, nurse practitioner or other healthcare professional.

How Care Is Delivered

Pharmacy Care Is Pharmacist-Led

Pharmacy Care at Nanton Family Pharmacy is provided by pharmacists as part of a licensed pharmacy. The pharmacist will explain whether your concern can be managed through Pharmacy Care or requires another type of assessment.

Minor Health Concerns We May Assess

Suitability depends on your symptoms, age, health history, medications and other clinical factors. The pharmacist decides individually whether an assessment or prescription is appropriate.

Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms

A pharmacist may assess symptoms that could be associated with an uncomplicated urinary tract infection, including when symptoms began, previous infections, allergies, pregnancy status when relevant, current medications and other conditions.

Some urinary symptoms require testing or assessment by another healthcare provider.

Pink Eye Symptoms

Redness, irritation or discharge from an eye can have several possible causes. The pharmacist may ask about which eye is affected, discharge, itching, pain, contact-lens use, recent illness and allergies.

Antibiotics are not appropriate for every case of eye redness.

Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Assessment may cover how often symptoms occur, when they occur, triggers, current medications and previous treatment.

The pharmacist may recommend lifestyle measures, non-prescription treatment, prescription treatment when appropriate, or follow-up with another provider.

Cold Sores

Treatment can depend on when symptoms began, previous cold sores, location, severity and current medications.

Some treatments work best when started early, but medication is only recommended after an appropriate assessment.

Shingles Symptoms

A painful or sensitive rash may have several possible causes, and timely assessment can matter when shingles is suspected.

The pharmacist reviews the rash, symptom history, age, medications and relevant conditions to decide whether pharmacy treatment or another assessment is needed.

Rashes and Minor Skin Concerns

  • Contact irritation
  • Mild allergic skin reactions
  • Some fungal skin conditions
  • Eczema-like symptoms

Suspected Minor Skin Infections

Review may include the affected area, how symptoms started, changes in redness or swelling, skin damage and previous treatment.

Not every skin infection can be managed in a pharmacy; the pharmacist will recommend another care provider when further examination or treatment is needed.

Acne

The assessment may include the areas affected, type and number of blemishes, how long acne has been present, products already tried and skin sensitivity.

Recommendations may include skin-care advice, non-prescription products or prescription medication when appropriate.

Nail Fungus Concerns

Changes in nail colour, thickness or texture can have different causes. The pharmacist may assess whether symptoms could be consistent with a fungal nail infection; some cases require confirmation or treatment elsewhere.

Hemorrhoids

Assessment may cover discomfort or itching, how long symptoms have been present, previous episodes and products already used.

Recommendations may include self-care, non-prescription products, prescription treatment when appropriate, or further assessment.

Headaches

The pharmacist may review the location and type of discomfort, when it began, frequency, triggers, medications already used and other symptoms.

Not every headache is a minor ailment β€” the pharmacist determines whether pharmacy treatment is suitable.

Contraception and Birth Control

The consultation may include health and medication history, previous contraceptive use, preferences, contraindications, drug interactions and follow-up planning.

The pharmacist explains which options may be appropriate and whether another provider should be involved.

Other Eligible Minor Ailments

Pharmacists may assess other conditions within their authorized scope and personal competence. Contact Nanton Family Pharmacy and briefly describe your concern β€” the team can tell you whether a pharmacist assessment may be available.

Available Testing

Rapid Throat Swab Testing

Rapid group A strep testing may be available through Pharmacy Care. Before testing, the pharmacist assesses your symptoms and relevant health information to determine whether a throat swab is appropriate.

Not every sore throat requires testing or antibiotic treatment. Call to confirm availability, age criteria, fees and appointment requirements.

Ask About Strep Testing
1Review symptoms and when they began
2Discuss relevant medical history and allergies
3Determine whether testing is suitable
4Perform an available throat swab when appropriate
5Explain the result and recommended next step
6Prescribe treatment when authorized and clinically appropriate
